Private
& Public Schools on Oahu, Hawaii
Oahu
Private Schools: According to the U.S. Bureau
of the Census, School Enrollment, Hawaii has a higher proportion
of students in private schools than most states. Hawai'i
has over 128 Hawai‘i Association of Independent Schools
(HAIS) accredited primary and secondary schools and Honolulu
offers some of the best private schools, including Punahou,
Iolani
and Mid-Pacific
Institute. Many newcomers to Oahu are often surprised
by the price of the schools which can range from $5,000
to $15,000 per student per school year, K-12. Hawai'i
Association of Independent Schools offers an excellent
summary of Hawai'i's private schools, including a member
directory and calendar of events. If you are interested
in private schools for your children, I highly recommend
the HAIS Admission fairs in October. This is an excellent
opportunity to meet representatives from the schools to
see if they are a good match for you and your family.

schools from Honolulu
magazine.
Application.
The application process begins in the fall,
where applications are due by 1 Dec at many of the private
schools. The process continues through the Spring
and for grades 6-12 often includes results from the SSAT,
teacher recommendations, report cards, a one-on-one interview
with the potential student, an essay and other documents/recommendations.
Lower grades, K-5 will have similar requirements, however
the younger children have "activity sessions"
rather than interviews. Also many private schools
will have limited spots available for certain grades, allowing
an influx of students at key grades. For example,
150 students enter at kindergarten, then for grades 1-5,
only a few students are admitted. Then, typically
schools may allow 50 in grade 6, 50 in grade 7, 30 in grade
8, etc. There is tremendous competition for these
spots. For example, for the 2006 school year some
schools had over 400 apply for 50 spots.

Oahu
Public Schools: For many buyers, one of the most
important criteria when choosing a house is the quality
of the public schools in the area. Here in Hawai'i,
Honolulu
Magazine "grades" the public schools annually
using math and reading scores, as well as parent, teacher
and student input. Another good website for comparing
and analyzing schools is GreatSchools.net.
As there are so many military installations on Oahu, I can't
list all schools associated with each installation.
However, when we begin to shop for your home, I can tell
you which schools are available in each area.
Registration.
While you are moving, it is a good idea to hand carry any
material that might expedite student enrollment. To
register your child, you will need a birth certificate or
proof of age, a release from the last school, and medical
records showing a physician examined your child within one
year of entry. The following shots are also required:
Diphtheria/Pertussis/Tetanus, Poliomyelitis, Rubeola/Rubella/Mumps,
and HIB/Haemophilus for children under 5. Kindergarten
is not mandatory in Hawai'i, but it is offered to children
reaching the age of five by December 31.
